"That's Not How It Is," my favorite Toby Keith song, from Unleashed: Keith could be really sexy and really funny – this unhappy one's not funny, but he keeps his wits about him, matter-of-fact when the facts are sad. The singing is two-thirds smooth to one-third gruff, the gruffness being used to suggest a reserve of warmth that has nowhere to go.

Meta paragraph for Substack: The line "this isolation booth I'm in is dark and turning cold" is from the song but doesn't represent Toby Keith's general demeanor. But it touched me today because I've been having struggle and sadness around missed connections (recent and from long ago). Communication is hard and where it gets blocked or turned off, pain happens. And the miscommunication is often never rectified. But it can be, when people and communities are willing.
